What is out of gauge transport?

Out of gauge (OOG) transport is the movement of cargo that exceeds the standard dimensions or capacity of conventional transport equipment and therefore requires specialist vehicles, handling and route planning.

Out of gauge cargo may be too wide, high, long or heavy to be transported using a standard trailer. Typical examples include industrial machinery, manufacturing equipment, construction components, specialist vehicles and other large or unusually shaped loads.

What is classed as out of gauge cargo?

There is no single size that defines every out of gauge load. Whether cargo is considered OOG depends on its dimensions and weight, the equipment being used and the countries through which it will travel.

For European road transport, an out of gauge movement may require specialist equipment such as low-loaders, extendable trailers or other configurations designed to accommodate oversized cargo.

Depending on the dimensions, weight and route, additional planning may also be required for permits, route restrictions, escorts and local regulations.

Is out of gauge the same as an abnormal load?

The terms out of gauge, oversized cargo and abnormal load are often used interchangeably, although their precise meanings can vary.

Out of gauge generally describes cargo that cannot be accommodated within standard transport dimensions, while abnormal load can have a specific regulatory meaning depending on the country in which the cargo is being transported.

For cross-border abnormal loads, careful planning is particularly important because requirements can change as a shipment moves between different European countries.

What does out of gauge transport involve?

Successful OOG transport starts well before the vehicle arrives to collect the cargo. The exact dimensions and weight of the load need to be established so that the appropriate equipment and route can be selected.

Planning can include vehicle and trailer selection, route assessment, permits and notifications, loading and unloading arrangements, escorts where required, and coordination between the different parties involved in the movement.

For international movements, customs requirements must also be considered. This is particularly important when transporting out of gauge cargo between the UK and EU, where customs procedures need to be coordinated with the physical transport operation.

Why is route planning important for abnormal loads?

An abnormal load cannot necessarily follow the same route as conventional freight.

Bridge heights and weight limits, road widths, tight turns, tunnels, roadworks and other restrictions can all affect the available route. Regulations governing oversized loads may also differ between countries.

Effective route planning helps ensure the proposed vehicle and cargo can complete the journey safely while complying with relevant national requirements.

How does Efret manage out of gauge European transport?

Efret provides out of gauge European transport and cross-border abnormal load solutions, bringing together specialist transport equipment, operational planning and customs expertise.

Each movement is assessed according to the dimensions and weight of the cargo, collection and delivery requirements, route and countries involved.

For international movements, Efret's transport and customs teams work together to provide a coordinated solution, helping customers manage both the physical movement of oversized cargo and the associated cross-border requirements.
