What is an ATA Carnet?

An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that allows businesses to temporarily export and import goods without paying customs duties or import taxes in participating countries. Often described as a "passport for goods", an ATA Carnet simplifies customs clearance by replacing multiple import and export declarations with a single document.

ATA Carnets are widely used when goods need to cross international borders temporarily before being returned to their country of origin.

What can an ATA Carnet be used for?

An ATA Carnet can be used for the temporary movement of:

  • Professional equipment
  • Exhibition and trade show goods
  • Commercial samples
  • Film and television equipment
  • Musical instruments
  • Sporting equipment
  • Scientific and technical equipment

The goods must be re-exported within the validity of the carnet and cannot be sold, hired out, consumed or permanently imported.

How long is an ATA Carnet valid?

An ATA Carnet is normally valid for 12 months from the date of issue. During this time, it can be used for multiple journeys to participating countries, provided the same goods are being transported and all customs procedures are correctly completed.

Which countries accept ATA Carnets?

More than 70 countries and territories participate in the ATA Carnet system, including many European countries, the UK, the USA, Japan, Canada and Australia. However, not every country accepts ATA Carnets, so it's important to check the requirements before shipping internationally.

Do I need an ATA Carnet?

You may need an ATA Carnet if you are temporarily sending goods overseas for:

  • Trade exhibitions and events
  • Product demonstrations
  • Sales presentations
  • Sporting competitions
  • Concerts and live performances
  • Film and television production
  • Equipment testing

Using an ATA Carnet can significantly reduce customs administration and help avoid delays at international borders.
